Sunshine & Sun Protection


Sunshine is Good, Sunburn is not.

The sun provides thousands of us with great enjoyment especially on holiday during the summer months; unfortunately it can also cause burning, wrinkling, leathery thickening and ageing of the skin; sometimes even skin cancer.

The aim of this message is to advise you about safer sunshine exposure.

Avoiding sunburn is vital, however, a little exposure to the sun can be good for us, helping the body to create vitamin D and a general feeling of wellbeing if we enjoy the outdoors.

We recommend a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 as a general satisfactory level of protection, although it is important to combine this with protective shade and clothing.

For an average adult, a minimum of 6 full teaspoons (approx. 36g) of sun lotion should be applied to cover the body inc. arms,face & neck, legs, front and back of body. Importantly, application should be repeated every 2 hours and immediately after swimming or perspiring, because towel drying alone can remove upto 85% of the product!!

  • Protect the skin using clothing, including a hat, t-shirt and sunglasses.
  • Spend some time in the shade during the hottest part of the day (11am-3pm)
  • Use a 'high protection' sun lotion of at least SPF30 which also has high UVA protection, make sure you apply generously and re-apply frequently.
  • Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight.
  • Seek an expert opinion if you notice any changes to a mole.
There are many brands of sun protection available to buy, choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and a UVA rating of 4 or 5 stars which is considered as a good standard of sun protection.
